CFive Hosts International Expert Discussion on Kazakhstan’s Political Reforms and Institutional Transformation

The analytical platform CFive at Astana International University hosted an international expert discussion titled “Kazakhstan in a Changing World Order: Political Reforms and Institutional Transformation.” The event brought together international experts and representatives of analytical institutions to discuss Kazakhstan’s political modernization, institutional reforms, and the country’s evolving role in the changing global environment.

The discussion was moderated by Iskander Akylbayev, Chairman of CFive, who opened the event by emphasizing that Kazakhstan’s ongoing reforms should be viewed within the broader context of global political and economic transformations. He noted that the restructuring of global supply chains, increasing geopolitical competition, and the growing strategic importance of Eurasia create new opportunities and challenges for countries pursuing institutional modernization and sustainable development.

The panel featured prominent international experts, including Alberto Turkstra, Project Director at Diplomatic World; Dr. Domenico Palmieri, Director of the Istituto Italiano per l’Asia (ISIA); Dr. Malgorzata Samojedny, CEO of the Opportunity Institute for Foreign Affairs (OIFA); Wesley Alexander Hill, representing the Energy, Economic Growth and Security Program at the International Tax and Investment Center; and Ralph Winnie, Vice President of the America–Eurasia Center and the Eurasian Business Coalition.

During the discussion, participants highlighted the positive dynamics of Kazakhstan’s institutional development and the ongoing process of political modernization. Experts noted that the reforms implemented in recent years aim to strengthen governance, enhance the role of representative institutions, and modernize the system of state administration. These developments, according to the speakers, demonstrate Kazakhstan’s commitment to adapting its political and economic institutions to new domestic and international realities.

Particular attention was given to Kazakhstan’s efforts to transition toward a more diversified and innovation-driven economy. Experts emphasized that modernization of the education system, development of science and technology, and investment in human capital are essential components of long-term economic growth and competitiveness.

The discussion also addressed Kazakhstan’s growing importance in regional connectivity and global trade. Participants highlighted the strategic significance of the Middle Corridor (Trans-Caspian International Transport Route), which connects China, Central Asia, the Caspian Sea region, the South Caucasus, and Europe. According to the speakers, the development of this corridor strengthens Kazakhstan’s role as a key transit hub linking Asia and Europe and contributes to the country’s broader economic and geopolitical relevance.

At the conclusion of the event, a Memorandum of Cooperation was signed between CFive and the Istituto Italiano per l’Asia (ISIA). The memorandum was signed by Sapargali Shalgimbayev, President of CFive, and Domenico Palmeri, Secretary-General of ISIA. The agreement aims to promote cooperation in analytical research, expert dialogue, academic exchange, and joint initiatives focused on international politics, economic development, and regional cooperation.
